BATTERED BUT NOT BROKEN “Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.” – Helen Keller

“In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me. Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works…For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. ” – Psalm 86:7-13

“…The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour… When the waves of death compassed me…The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death pre- vented me; In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple...” – II Samuel 22:2-7

To Our WME Mission Partners & Donors,

There is a strength, a stabilizing faith, and a deep understanding we only seem to find when adversity touches our lives. It happens after we are shaken to the core and realize the things or relationships we relied on are gone. Those crisis moments are so very painful, and yet that is when we discover that God is Emmanuel -- God with us. We learn HE IS our salvation, our hope, our strength, our shield, our fortress, our rock, our re- deemer. When battling adversity, we come to identify with hymnal words stating: “His oath, His covenant, His blood support me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my Hope and Stay. On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”

Recently, WME’s Foreign Missions Manager (Karen McCarley) and I visited part of WME’s work in India. The irony is not lost on me that the high point of the visit was at an area that had suffered the greatest de- struction.

In Berhampur, WME has a wonderful home that has operated many years. But in October 2013, high winds and driving rain from a powerful cyclone destroyed the children’s home. By God’s grace, the girls had been evacuated before the storm hit their area, and not one of them was harmed. But afterwards, over 100 girls and young women discovered the storm had completely destroyed their home, and they moved into the open floor of an available office-type build- ing.

When Karen and I toured the area, con- crete slabs and piles of rubble were most of what remained. Gone were the school building, dormitory, church building, garden and cooking areas. Ruined toys, clothing, cooking pots and books were strewn around. But these girls who had lost every- thing held our hands, laughed and smiled with us, and hugged us often. We had the most beautiful, open-air service within the uneven walls of the chapel – the only walls left standing. The girls sang worship songs in both Hindi and English, and we prayed with them. The staff from the home thanked us and WME sponsors for all their help and simply asked for our prayers.
