NORMANDY I CYCLE TOURS

few dips like this near around Fakenham and rather a lot around Okehampton. Still, we strolled down to La Grande Cascade and had a laze about unfitting for such an early hour.

FULGENCE TO VIRE Whilst the voie verte was not clearly signed from the road, it did not take much common-sense to pick it up again. The old railway which it followed was engineered by Fulgence Bienvenue, described in the route guide as a French Isambard Kingdom Brunel. If people are not born to greatness, they certainly seem to be christened for it. He did well. Though the line rose to 1034 feet the gradients are easy. Better, though mainly wooded, there are plenty of glorious views A look at the map shows how much the railway took the line of least resistance compared to the most direct route. It was tempting to try to cut corners along minor roads, but we kept to the official TdeM route and took the longer mileage and the easier gradients.
