EW year, new man – don’t worry I’ve not done anything daft, I just didn’t have time to introduce Greetings Today’s new advertising manager Ian

MacFarlaine last month apart from slotting his photo into the contents page.

He joined just as we went to print on the issue so we’d barely been introduced. Now we’ve been working together for a month (well, the poor soul has been working while putting up with my gibbering) I can tell you, Ian is absolutely lovely and, with a strong background in sales, marketing and business development, is a very good addition to the Greetings Today and Lema Publishing team.

It was a baptism of fire as his second day saw us attending the Danilo 35th birthday bash – pictured here – so he had to put up with my ramblings and complaining about my feet having worn heels for the first time in ages, while being introduced to some of the great and the good at the party.

Bless him, Ian managed to keep smiling as his experience working for various B2B and trade mags in different industries kicked in, and he’s made a very good start as readers can see with the quality of this, his first issue of Greetings Today. As it’s January, with all the new year’s resolutions and reflections on the past 12 months that entails, introducing Ian to the greetings industry has allowed to me understand how far I’ve come myself since starting here in April 2012 – not that I’d ever dare say I’m an expert! Showing how the mag works, telling retailers what’s new, different and

available while also taking care of the advertisers who, after all, are the life blood of any trade publication, has given me the chance to reflect on all the lovely people there are around. From the new publishers just starting out that we’re able to introduce to the retailers who make up 80 per cent of our ABC-audited 6,202 (and rising!) circulation and seeing them take flight, through the smaller and medium companies right up to the biggest names in the business, the vast majority have been nothing but helpful and welcoming. As GT is the only audited UK greetings card trade magazine we know we get to the people who matter, buyers, retailers, suppliers - everyone! The GT team is on a personal mission to help everyone sell more. We do our very best to present retailers with a broad and impartial picture of the news, views and products from across the industry and ensure feedback from the shop floor reaches publishers thanks to regular articles like Talk Of The Town and retailers’ comments within editorial features.

With our email newsflash service delivering information straight to more than 3,800 inboxes almost daily, plus the print copy regularly landing on desks and doormats, we know Greetings Today reaches the parts other beers cannot reach – as the Heineken ad said. It’s a very exciting time to be in this industry as the country begins to emerge from the recession and economic downturn of recent years, with greetings and stationery shops really coming to the fore, as the expansion of groups like Scribbler, Blott and Card Outlet proves. Ian’s settling in nicely, and the Greetings

Today team is all set for the start of the 2014 trade show season - but please hide those sweetie jars at Top Drawer and Spring Fair - we’ve eaten way too much over Christmas!

COLOURFUL, simple and effective - that’s this window display from new Brighton retailer Creased, where they only opened for business on December 4. Symetria Cards put us on to this contemporary new retailer in Meeting House Lane, where they stock numerous piblishers including Blue Eyed Sun, Ruth Jackson and Kiss Me Kwik, plus the Card Creator system which allows the creation of personalised and unique greetings in-store. Less than three weeks after opening Creased already have a good online presence on Facebook with a caption competition, regular naughty and nice card of the week postings, and interaction with customers. If you’d like your store to feature in Greetings Today, please email a photograph to the editor, tracey@lemapublishing., and we’ll pick one for this slot each month.
