y & Abbeydale Spring Term January – April 2014 Let’s Get Digital
Friday 11th October, Winter Gardens – Sheffield City Centre Our flagship event to combat digital exclusion took place at the Winter Gardens on Friday October 11th to coincide with national ‘Get Online Week’. Organised by Heeley Online Centre manager, Maxine Bowler, in partnership with Sheffield City Council, the theme of the event was ‘Hobbies & Interests’ and how being online can make these cheaper, easier and more fun.
We wanted to engage as many members of the public as possible with our pop-up IT suite, and Learning Champions, Liz, Yvonne and Fiona were on hand to provide first-time computer users with information on accessible free/ low cost IT classes.
Howard Middleton from the Great British Bake-off (pictured right), gave a demonstration of ‘digitally assisted baking’ and Curry’s sponsored a ‘Win A Tablet’ competition. There was also an iPad band and taster sessions in adult learning courses including Family History and Digital Photography.
Ring Liz or Maxine at Heeley Development Trust (250 0613) for more information on our community IT courses.
More Local People Celebrate Success in Community Learning
A big ‘’well done’’ to the Entry Level 2 and 3 ESOL group, pictured right, who acheived a 100% pass rate in their latest English examination. The course has proved very popular with members of the local community who use English as a second or other language and at the moment there is a waiting list for places on the next course.
Pictured far left is Andy Morley, who attends computer classes every Monday. Andy has passed Word processing Level 1 and is just completing Desk Top Publishing. Pictured left is Kirsty Jenkinson, who has passed level 2 Numeracy which gives her the equivalant of GCSE Level Maths.
Call Liz at Heeley Development Trust (250 0613) for more information about our local adult learning classes.

hospitals, with ipad and tablet training for people bored and unable to move in bed and IT hubs set up in canteens, with an eventual aim of moving onto wards themselves”. “Participants will be supported at home after being discharged by the RVS buddying scheme, learning how to use personalised IT equipment to access online cognitive therapy, exercise and healthy living services”.
