PROCESS ENERGY USUAGE - LANEMARK

The energy savings that are available by the adoption of modulating gas and air control methods compared to burner systems that utilise a constant speed combustion air fan can be readily quantified. The percentage gas saving that is available from modulating gas and combustion air burner control systems rises dramatically as the ‘Burner Utilisation Factor’ – the ratio between the average and maximum firing rate of a burner system – decreases. Overall, the higher the oven temperature and lower the Burner Utilisation Factor, the greater the energy saving potential.

By way of illustration, Adrian Langford highlights a typical installation of an oven operating efficiently at 225°C, where the Burner Utilisation Factor is 75%. “In this case, the gas saving available from a modulating gas and air control system would be around 3%, which increases significantly to 9% if the Burner Utilisation Factor

The company – which has successfully installed process gas heating systems worldwide for over three decades – says these are factors that are difficult to ignore in the current energy cost environment. Many take the view that this is an issue that is unlikely to be less significant in the future and thus its impact on investments and ongoing processing decisions is fundamental.

reduces to 50%,” he says. “It would be over 20% if the factor is 30% or lower.”

Adrian Langford points out that, for an oven fitted with a total burner capacity of 600kW and at a natural gas cost of 3 pence/kWh, the above gas savings would translate into annual savings of £781, £1,562 or £2,187 respectively at Burner Utilisation Factors of 75%, 50% and 30% – based on an 8 hour production day, 5 days a week and a 48 week year.

“Manufacturers of processing systems are paying great attention to minimising the

negative impact of increasing energy costs by optimising efficiencies and therefore energy consumption,” adds Adrian Langford, “which is a commitment that offers important benefits to everybody involved in this sector.”
