dark red, is firm and glossy with a pleasant sweet, northern strawberry flavour. The calyx detaches easily which makes it suited for processing as well as the fresh market.

Raspberries

Work is also underway to develop new raspberry varieties, and in the past few years, several have been released that are very popular, says Kempler, including the Saanich and Chemainus varietals.

All PARC varieties are bred to be resistant to aphids, which can contaminate the fruit harvested, as well as being a vector for disease. Efforts are now focussed on breeding raspberries to improve their disease resistance, because there are so many problems with the use of pesticides, Kempler explained. One of the main disease issues in raspberries is wood rot or Phytophthora root rot. Kempler notes that the Pacific Northwest is the largest producing area in the world for processed raspberries.

One of the more recent PARC varieties is Chemainus, which produces a high yield of large, firm

first planting year. Bud break is even along the length of the canes, and is earlier than Meeker. Fruit is similar to Tulameen, but is smaller. It is firm, shiny and a medium to dark red. The firmness, colour and attractive appearance of Chemainus fruit make it a good choice for individual quick freezing (IQF). For processing, it is comparable to Meeker, the main processing cultivar currently grown in the Pacific Northwest, noted Kempler.

The Saanich variety of raspberry is a very high-yielding cultivar producing medium-sized, firm, sweet fruit which are also suitable for machine harvesting and for IQF processing.

It has an earlier bud break than all other locally-grown cultivars and a fruit that is long and conical, medium to light red and glossy. Because of its lighter colour, it is not suitable for some types of processing where dark colour is desirable.

For resistance to root rot, the new Ukee Red raspberry is recommended,
