DECEMBER 2013 Vikings Discovered Temecula & Opened a Store By Carol Malin In the year two thousand nine, Norwegian-born Mette and her husband Greg

Gaal settled in Temecula and opened The Little Viking, a Scandinavian gift shop, in Old Town Temecula. Mette is a native of Oslo, Norway. Taking a break from her business studies at

the University of Oslo in 1964, Mette came to California to visit her aunt who was “caterer to the stars” and dignitaries. During the visit she met Greg, who was bar manager for her aunt’s catering business, and soon they were married and parents to two children. For some years they lived in the mid-west where Greg had been brought-up but they returned to California and set up shop. The Little Viking was born when Mette founded the first Little Viking shop in Seaport Village in San Diego in an effort to keep in touch with her homeland. The Little Viking in Temecula is now the only Scandinavian specialty store be-

tween Temecula and Mexico. The shop offers a large selection of Scandinavian jew- elry, Royal Copenhagen collectables, Magnor of Norway crystal, Carl Larsson bone china and melamine trays, dripless candles, specialty foods, holiday decorations, God Jul cups, and Ekelund linens.

Not familiar with Ekelund linens? You may be interested to learn that they are

deemed “the linens of kings, emperors, and presidents.” Since 1878 Ekelund has been providing linens to the kings of Sweden, His Majesty Akihito Emperor of Japan, and the president of Russia, as well as smart households across the globe. The Ekelund family has poured care and timeless tradition into creating textiles bearing their name for four generations. The Little Viking sells beautifully woven Ekelund dish- cloths, kitchen towels, placemats, tablecloths, and table runners from the oldest clas- sic pattern to the novel Rainbow line. If you admire amber jewelry this shop is the place. You will find a mix of Baltic

orange and yellow amber beaded necklaces in graduating lengths, earrings, and pen- dants in their inventory. In addition to Scandinavian items, the store sells French Provence linens, Russ-

ian Matryoshka dolls, fun T-shirts, books, wine glasses, kitchen items including aprons and chef hats, and Charles Viancin BPA-free food grade silicon kitchen ac- cessories. Viancin accessories are very popular but are not widely sold locally, so keep The Little Viking in mind if you are a fan of this product. Searching for charming holiday decorations? Look no further than The Little

Viking. Here you will find a stock of elegant silver-colored wreaths, pine cones, an- gels, reindeer, hearts and more. Besides the silver decorations, you will find cheery Christmas elves, little Santas in bright red costumes, angel chimes, can- delabras, candle holders, electric wel- come lights, and nativity sets. “Ha en god jul og et godt nytt år!”

“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”
