Kids Assistance League of Temecula Val-

ley collected approximately 1,000 books to support child literacy for Make a Differ- ence Day, largest national day of commu- nity service sponsored by USA WEEKEND and Points of Light. Students at the Pechanga Boys &

Girls Club were all smiles as members of Assistance League of Temecula Valley delivered over 400 books to the club-

house. “With approximately 200 students at each of our four sites every day, we encourage reading and the kids love to read,” said Maryann Ed-

Revenue from the Assistance League Thrift Shop, 28720 Via Mon-

Western Selects Local

Student Teams for Annual Science Competition

Arlington, Elsinore, Norte Vista High Schools

Three local high schools from

Western’s service area were chosen for sponsorships for the 2014 Met- ropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Solar Cup competition. Western’s sponsored schools in- clude Riverside’s Arlington High School and Norte Vista High School, with co-sponsor Riverside Public Utilities; and Lake Elsinore’s Elsinore High School, with partner Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District. Among these teams, Norte

Vista HS is Western’s rookie crew. Arlington HS and Elsinore HS have competed in multiple Solar Cup events, respectively. Sponsorship funds help to cover

the parts needed to assemble the boats. Students initially receive a wood kit to build the hull and work to- gether to assemble their final project. Student teams work all school

year-long to complete their boat, as well as pass several inspections and complete reports. One member of the team, usually the lightest, will serve as the team’s skipper and drive and maneuver the boat during race weekend held at Lake Skinner, just north of Temecula, from May 16 to 17, 2014. Teams end the compe- tition with endurance and sprint races throughout the day and spend the evenings camping with fellow teammates and competing schools.
