lot has been made of the importance of apprenticeships in recent years and there


is something rather Victorian – or even Dickensian – about a government talking them up as the future. But in jewellery, no matter how much of a traditionalist you are,


it’s worth giving this some thought. Before delving into exactly how


apprentice-heavy the industry is, it’s worth looking at the historical backdrop. Like many other industries, jewellery has spent much of the last 30 years watching skilled and technical jobs migrate to China and a handful of other Asian countries.
