SCOTLAND claimed an impressive top 16 finish among the 32 nations competing in theWorld Junior Team Championships for the Suhandinata Cup in Bangkok at the end of October. Although they were edged out 3-2 by


Russia then beaten 3-0 by Germany in the positional play-offs, the quartet of Josh Neil, Adam Hall and sisters Julie and Heather MacPherson did Scotland proud in Thailand. The youngsters finished second in Group X2 despite a heavy opening defeat by a


strongMalaysian team, who had the luxury of fielding different players for each of the five rubbers, then went down 3-2 in a close contest with Bulgaria. But they responded in positive fashion on


day two to beat the Philippines 4-1 and claim second place in their group ahead of Bulgaria on countback. Despite play-off defeats by France, Russia


and Germany the Scots still claimed a top- 16 finish after five matches in four days. Continued on page 30
