ABOuT ThE EGGhEADS Eye On Mrak, one of a series of ceramic egghead sculptures located across the UC Davis campus, serves as the Humanities Institute’s unofficial mascot with appearances on its web site, brochures and posters. The Eggheads began appearing on campus in 1991 and are the works of the late Robert Arneson, renowned California artist and longtime professor of art at UC Davis. Arneson’s widow, Sandra Shannonhouse, recently encouraged people viewing Arneson’s work to look beyond what seems “edgy, naughty or funny” to find more serious comments about political, social and economic issues. For us at the Humanities Institute, Eye On Mrak signifies the openness, curiosity and knowledge that accompanies the work of great artists and scholars in the humanities.
