Open Studio for Sunbury Textile Artist Helen began sewing at a very young age and at nine embroidered some chair backs for her grandmother which were still in use when Granny died twenty-two years later. Since retiring as Head of Kenyngton Manor Primary School she has given more time to her work both as a writer of books for primary children on all aspects of English and as a textile artist. After nursing her mother through the final years of her life Helen took City and Guilds Parts 1 and 2 in Creative Embroidery. She is a member of the Phoenix Contemporary Textile Group and the Kingston Branch of the Embroiderers Guild. Her inspirations come from her travel photographs, nature, original designs or how a fabric moves in her hands. She uses both hand and machine embroidery, working with dyed fabrics and recycled materials. Some of her work is framed, other pieces are free hang- ings. She also makes cushions, scarves and small items like bean bag frogs and seasonal cards all which will be on sale during her open studio weekend. Also on sale will be her book ‘The Snowcat’ which tells how Father Christmas delivers his presents when the reindeer go down with ‘flu. With its delightful illus- trations it makes an engaging Christmas present for three to six year olds. As part of Surrey Arts Open Studios her studio will be open from 11am – 6pm on the following dates: November 29th to December 1st, December 6th – 8th and December 13th and 15th (not 14th). Helen also welcomes visitors to her studio, by prior arrangement, at 7, Bramwell Close, Sunbury-on- Thames, Middlesex TW16 5PU. Contact her by email: hfhadley@googlemail.com. or by telephone on 01932 780147. This months front cover is by Helen Hadley.
