Health & Wellness Matters by Sam Mill, Balanced Wellness

Welcome to my first Health & Wellness feature. This month I am focusing on something many of us can relate to, stress! What IS stress? Stress is an unhealthy state of either body or mind and affects everyone differ- ently. The most common symptoms are headaches, irritability, insomnia, loss or

gain of appetite, constant tiredness, depression, high blood pressure, frequent colds, hair loss and for women, irregular monthly cycles and fertility issues. All symptoms of stress are related to one thing, our endocrine system. This is the family of glands such as adrenals and thyroid that secrete chemical mes- sengers known as hormones, which tell our bodies what to do and when to do it. When we become stressed, these glands become off balance creating ill health. You can’t always change your situation, but you can help take the stress out your body by supporting it in the following ways; WATER – Drink at least ½ litres per day of filtered or bottled water. A dehydrated body is a stressed body. EAT WELL – Breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, dinner like a Pauper to help balance your blood sugar levels. Eat organic produce wherever possible to avoid pesticides, hormones and antibiot- ics. Aim for 30-50 grams of fibre a day to keep your digestive system healthy which will support your immune system. Eat good fats such as olive oil, avocados and nuts to help fight fatigue and maintain your mood. EXERCISE – Gentle light exercise is best when stressed to avoid the risk of a snapped Achilles ten- don! REST & RELAXATION – Allow yourself at least 20 mins per day to practice being a human being rather than a human doing. SLEEP – Aim to be in bed by 10pm, sleep in the dark and avoid TV and computer screens one hour

before bed. SUPPLEMENTS – Vitamin B supports your nerv-
