Sponsored spell ‘The school wanted to raise money for a new library software system and suggested a sponsored spelling test. The sponsored spell was for Years 1-4, and was planned to coincide with the usual Friday spelling tests. Letters and sponsor forms were sent to parents a couple of weeks beforehand and the PTFA helped by arranging volunteers to come in and mark on the day. The normal weekly spellings, plus additional words, were sent home to practise in the week leading up to the spelling test. This project was school/teacher driven but the PTFA provided support. All pupils in Years 1-4 took part, but it was up to each child/parent how much sponsorship money was raised. The school raised an amazing £1,450! The PTFA provided the additional amount required to fund the project. This worked well as it was a strong school/PTFA joint project with a direct benefit to pupils.’ Claire Smith, PTFA secretary, Swallowfield Lower School, Woburn Sands (350 pupils)

Word in a word ‘To celebrate World Book Day 2013, we ran a “Word in a Word” sponsored competition. Children and families had to find as many words in our school name “Derwent Lower School” as they could. The winner found 511 words! All those who entered received a certificate in assembly. We advertised the activity in our PTA newsletter a month before, then sent forms out on a Friday with a return date of the following Tuesday. These things often get overlooked if you give too much time; 24 children took part and the winner received a £10 book token. It was a very easy fundraiser, making £220 profit!’ Sarah Smith, chair, Derwent Lower School, Bedfordshire (110 pupils)

Ready, Steady... Read ‘We ran an Usborne Ready, Steady... Read sponsored reading challenge to combine a fundraising event with the chance to promote literacy and a love of reading. As an incentive for taking part, pupils received half of their sponsor money back in book vouchers. The event was organised by our local Usborne Books rep, who prepared posters, sponsorship forms and letters to parents. We also promoted it on our PTA Facebook page. The sponsored read took part over a week, after which, we collected in the money and handed it
