BRITISH CURRY AWARDS WINNER PLANS EXPANSION


THE inaugural winner of the Best Takeaway at the British Curry Awards 2012, Mushtaqs Restaurant in Hamilton, Glasgow, is set to create 50 new jobs on top of the 34 strong team currently in place as a result of a major expansion of its business premises. The restaurant is looking to build on its current maximum 29 minute home delivery service which has proved to be a big success. With 18 chefs employed at the moment, the restaurant is able to produce one freshly cooked meal every 10 seconds during peak times, but has been unable to expand on this due to the size of the current kitchen. Planning permission has now


been granted to build a new state-of-the-art custom built kitchen that will enable a cooking capacity of 4000 meals per night. Mushtaqs expects the new


kitchen, which represents a £0.5 million investment, will be ready by January 2014. Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism welcomed the job boost to the Lanarkshire area. He said: “Fifty new jobs in Lanarkshire is great news for the hospitality sector in


the local area. I recognise the great work that Mushtaqs are doing to help young people into a number of these jobs through its Training & Progression Programme.” The 50 new positions will include chefs, telephone operators, kitchen assistants and delivery drivers and these will be recruited in a phased programme starting early next year.

The restaurant is the creation of Ajmal Mushtaq who left a successful role in management consultancy to pursue his dream of creating Mushtaqs. He was crowned Scotland’s Chef of the Year 2012 at the Scottish Curry Awards and is a regular Guest Chef at major live cooking events in Scotland, including BBC Good Food Show and the Taste of Scotland events. He says, “Customers have an appetite for fast efficient service and my team delivers the customers exactly what they want – great food within 29 minutes to their door. I am very excited at the prospect of creating new jobs and this new investment will enable us to further build on this success.” n
