THE new Ladies’ Captain for Morpeth Golf Club, Christine Taberham, has started her year- long charity fund- raising campaign with a dinner at Ashiana’s Indian Restaurant in Bedlington in Northumberland.

Sussex vineyard wins award

SEDLESCOMBE, a Sussex based vineyard, has won two major medals at the recent International Organic Wine Awards, contested by wines from 18 countries. Of the 603 wines that were entered only the two award winners were produced in England - the Sedlescombe Premier Brut 2010 vintage sparkling wine, and Sedlescombe 2011 Regent, an oak-matured red wine. Both wines won the Silver award in their class. Proprietor and wine maker

Roy Cook said: “It’s well known that English whites and sparkling wines can win awards internationally, but what this result shows is, in a good year, an English red wine can also out perform some other reds even from the big name wine regions of the world.” Founded in 1979 by Roy and Irma Cook, with Soil Association certification gained in 1982, Sedlescombe Vineyard is England’s oldest and largest organic wine producer. n

The event, which raised an impressive £1,225 for The British Lung Foundation (BLF), was held in memory of Mrs Taberham’s school friend Anne Harriman, who suffered from a rare lung condition. The BLF supports families affected by lung disease, funding

research, running support groups and providing specialist nurses to give respiratory care to patients at home. Mrs Taberham hopes to raise funds for the charity throughout her year as Ladies’ Captain at Morpeth Golf Club, as well as increase awareness of the BLF’s valuable work. n
