Toys, everybody knows we grind our way through summer to

taste the pleasures of fall. Summer suddenly ends; we take back the beach, become friendlier, laugh more, and take time to soak up the changes. The weather changes, surf breaks change, we change, and—hold on to your cozies—beers change! Praise Ninkasi!

As refreshing as all those summer lagers and

pilsners are, and as endless as the variations of wheat beers seem to be, one can only run the cart of good taste down the gullet so many times before our palate has permanent ruts. Call it Seasonal Palate Dysphasia. Somewhere deep within those of us who, as the Thai people like to say, don’t have the tongues of alligators, is a need for a little “strange.”

Whether your fall kick is a spiced beer such as pumpkin ale, or those traditional malty Oktoberfest/ Marzen beers, or hop harvest ales that feed the need of so many American hop heads, there is a North Carolina brewery ready to sling you the goods.

Through these articles I try to point out packaged

NC products (read: bottles and cans) for the sake of convenience to the reader, but I feel it would be a gross violation of “All That Is Right” if I did not implore these same readers to actually visit these mini hotbeds of artisanship that are, literally, all over this state. These brewtopias will have the freshest products (some better than packaged products of the same name), the most interesting variety, and, most importantly, seasonal offerings.

Another great way to check out many breweries and beers at once as well as being part of a HUGE party is to go to one of the bazillion beer festivals sprouting up all over country and especially here in the zymurgist’s** jewel of the Southeast, North Carolina.

The World Beer Fest, a well organized, long running festival put on by the magazine All About Beer, will take place October 5 in Durham and promises to be an interesting mix of 300 or so beers.

On the other hand, if, like many Outer Bankers,

going over the bridge is too daunting a task for you this fall try one of these:


French Broad Zepptemberfest, Highland Clawham- mer, Foothills Oktoberfest, Duck Rabbit Marzen, Olde Hickory Oktoberfest


Outer Banks Brewing Moondog ESB, Sierra Nevada Estate Ale (I know it’s a California brewery, but they have a production plant underway in Asheville and this is a fantastic beer IF you can get your hands on some), and if you want something really obscure and unusual try the Outer Banks Brewing Vitis Reductus Maximus which is a high gravity, barrel aged Trappist style ale using a Sanctuary Vineyard grape harvest re- duction and Old Stock ale blend (Whew, a lot going on there!)
