O’Hagan have put together a packed programme

The menu for the first Wells Food Festival has been announced, with a variety of culinary events taking place on Sunday 20 October under the banner of the ‘Great Somerset Sunday Lunch’.

New foodie festival launches

This year’s Wells Festival of Literature has a stellar line-up of authors, journalists, historians and scientists appearing at a variety of events from 11 – 19 October. It’s time to pick up a festival programme and book now to guarantee your seat for some of the most high profile guests, including political broadcaster-turned-historian Peter Snow, who will be telling the story of ‘When Britain Burned the White House’ and the 1814 invasion of Washington (7.30pm, Friday 11 October); or keynote speaker Clive Anderson’s talk on Bark at Wells Cathedral, in support of the work of The Woodland Trust (7.30pm, Tuesday 15 October). The festival will be opened by Glastonbury Festival organizer Michael Eavis, and the main event will be a ticketed lunch for 100 in the Town Hall. At this one-day pop-up restaurant, a 4-course lunch will be cooked by several local chefs, all keen to champion local producers. Cooking the starter will be Adam Fellows (Goodfellows, Wells) with Josh Eggleton (The Pony & Trap, Chew Magna) preparing the main course, a vegetarian option created by Trine Hahnemann championing Sharpham Park, and a delicious dessert served up by The Ethicurean (Barley Wood Walled Garden, Wrington), which will be championing Yeo Valley.

Jim Crace, and then discuss the novel in detail with the author himself at Wells Town Hall (2pm, Sunday 13 October). There’s plenty of local interest too, with Jane Borodale talking about her new novel – The Knot Garden – based on the true story of Lytes Cary Manor in Somerset (12.30pm, Tuesday 15 October); while award-winning writer Nell Leyshon returns to her childhood home to reveal how the voices of Somerset haunt her writing (11.30am, Saturday 12 October). At the Vintage Tea Party, you can get baking, dress up and enter the cake competition, to be judged by Fiona Cairns, maker of the Royal Wedding Cake and enjoy the best of Somerset’s cream teas and cakes at a vintage themed spread in the Bishop’s Barn hosted by celebrity designer, stylist and author Pearl Lowe. Plus there’ll be The Sheppey in the Market bar for sampling artisan-produced cider, beer and other drinks throughout the day; a foodie pub quiz at The Fountain; a range of street food cooked with Somerset produce; cook book signings; live music, and local pubs, cafés and restaurants will be serving up a special ‘Somerset dish of the day’ to celebate the event.
