NGS August gardens: Barum and Jasmine Cottage

Barum (pictured above left - Jasmine Cottage are the two pictures on the right)

Description: ‘Barum’ is an informal 1/3acre plantsman’s garden, gently sloping to the south- east, with an unusually mild, coastal micro-climate which has been exploited to include many unusual and tender plants from around the world. Since we found a largely neglected garden in 1991, it has been reclaimed by hacking back large areas and planting an eclectic collection. There is a patio with raised fountain bed, a pergola of climbers including a Dregea sinensis that exudes a powerful aroma throughout July and August. The top section of the garden contains 3 areas growing flowering shrubs, with one successfully growing acid preferring plants despite our being on the limestone bedrock. Beyond a trellis is another 8 beds, one with a collection of succulents, another with two Iochroma australis (white and blue flowered), also a Grevillea rosmarinifolia and many other plants from the southern hemisphere. There is a vegetable patch (where the Under Gardener provides kitchen produce in accordance with the Head Gardener’s demands). During the past year several areas have been redeveloped - an unchanged garden is a boring garden, it is much more fun to see changes. Barum is never “finished”.

Jasmine Cottage

Description: This is a cottage-type garden with a difference. It has been created by Michael and Margaret Redgrave over the past 30 years on a third of an acre plot which runs parallel to the Bristol Channel, a few hundred yards from Ladye Bay at Clevedon. A good depth of top soil with a pH of neutral enables us to grow a wide range of plants from cottage garden lupins, phlox, dianthus, geraniums, roses, campanulas, scabious, salvias, lavenders and foxgloves to the unusual climbers, some hardy like Schisandra spananthera, from China, with coral-red, sphere shape flowers in April/May and the deciduous climbing Dicentra macrocapnos with its golden yellow flowers, or tender perennials Rhodochiton atrosanguineus

with small magenta persistent parasols and purple/ black corollas and Lophospermum ‘Red Dragon’, bright cerise pink foxglove-type flowers that grow in profusion on long trailing stems. Paths lead from one closely planted bed to another and through a garden divided with black squared trellis supporting fragrant varieties of roses with colourful clematis. A fairly large space is given over to a gravel garden with a dozen varieties of ornamental grasses and low growing mounds of Geranium sanguineum cultivars and Hemerocallis making a colourful display for many months.
