ing poles, yet it delivers a well-controlled light where it is needed. The concealed façade lighting also makes the landmark adaptable to various events and festivals. Keeping the deck and wall surfaces free of light sources provides driving comfort and safety, a fact that has been proven by statistics that show no recorded accidents in the year since the new bridge opened, compared to an average of two accidents per week, the highest in the city, before the project was undertaken.


In addition to providing glare-free, strobe- free and shadow-free lighting, the lumi- naires can be maintained safely by one in- dividual with ease, causing no disruption to traffic flow. The energy performance of the solution is also inspiring, proving indirect lighting can be environmentally sustainable. When it came to producing environmentally sensible solutions, sustainability was ap- proached with a holistic perspective. Rather than just considering the lighting energy, a much wider spectrum of related operational

Die neue Unterführung und Brücke für die Kings Ave- nue in Canberra weist ein Beleuchtungsdesign auf, das durch Steensen Varming entwickelt worden ist. Im Ge- gensatz zu traditionellen Tunnelbeleuchtungen ist die Unterführung einmalig und wird kontrovers beleuchtet, ausschließlich vom Boden aus, wofür asymmetrische lineare Boden-Leuchtstoffleuchten von BEGA benutzt werden. Glatte Mehrkopf-Masten, die durch iGuzzi- ni hergestellt und ECC Lighting vertrieben werden, wurden verwendet, um das Wirrwarr auf dem Brück- endeck zu verringern; die vier 55-Fuss-Masten steigern die Symmetrie der Brücke und verringern das Wirrwarr auf dem Deck. As well as this, wherever possible, locally made solutions have been incorporated into the project with the railings and reflectors that house the concealed bridge façade lighting being locally sourced. The construction of the underpass has improved traffic movement and journey times, while dramatically increasing traffic, pedestrian and bicyclist safety. It has been acknowledged by the local authority that the project has enhanced Canberra with its vibrant look, lending the city a streamlined cutting edge feel that will, in time, benefit

Il nuovo sottopassaggio e ponte della Kings Avenue di Canberra presenta una soluzione di illuminazione sviluppata da Steensen Varming. Diversamente dalla solita illuminazione sotterranea, il sottopassaggio è illuminato in modo tanto originale da suscitare pare- ri discordanti; infatti è illuminato solo dal basso, per mezzo delle lampade Fluorescenti Lineari Asimmet- riche Inserite nel suolo BEGA. Particolari pali di illumi- nazione a più terminazioni prodotti dalla iGuzzini e for- niti dalla EEC Lighting, sono stati utilizzati per ridurre l’ingorgo sul ponte; i pali, alti 16,7 metri, valorizzano le simmetrie del ponte e ne riducono la congestion. Il mantenere le su- perfici delle pareti e del calpestato sgombri da fonti di luce offre una possibilità di guida confortevole e mag- giore sicurezza, un fatto statisticamente dimostrato dall’assenza di incidenti nel periodo di circa un anno trascorso dall’apertura del ponte. Oltre a garantire una illuminazione priva di riflessi, lampeggiamenti ed ombre, le lampade possono es- sere manutenute in sicurezza da un solo individuo, senza che ciò abbia ripercussioni negative sulla scor- revolezza del traffico sottostante. I risultati di questa soluzione sono qualitativamente notevoli ed in grado di dimostrare come l’illuminazione indiretta sia una realizzazione ecosostenibile.


ESPAÑOL


El nuevo paso subterráneo y puente en Kings Avenue en Canberra, presenta un diseño de iluminación por Steensen Varming. A diferencia de la tradicional ilu- minación de túneles, el paso subterráneo se encuentra iluminado de manera única y controvertida, única-


mente desde el suelo, utilizando luminarias Inground Asymmetric Linear Fluorescent de BEGA. Se utilizaron elegantes mástiles multifunción, producidos por iG- uzzini y suministrados por ECC Lighting para reducir el abarrotamiento en la plataforma del puente; en el que los cuatro mástiles de 55 pies resaltan la simetría del puente minimizando el abarrotamiento visual en la plataforma. La solución crea una zona de 100.000 pies cuadrados libres de alumbrado tradicional, incluso brinda iluminación bien controlada donde es necesa- rio. El hecho de mantener las superficies de la platafor- ma y paredes libres de fuentes de luz, brinda seguridad y comodidad en el manejo, hecho que ha sido probado por las estadísticas que arrojan que no se registraron accidentes en el año desde que el nuevo puente fue inaugurado. Las luminarias, además de haber probado ser una iluminación libre de resplandor, libre de luz estroboscópica y sin sombras, pueden ser mantenidas de manera segura por un solo individuo, sin provocar interrupción en el flujo del tráfico.
