GUIDING LIGHT


Backlit wood veneer feature walls by GPI Design form part of a new lighting design by MCLA at the US National Cancer Institute in Maryland, leading visitors through an inspiring passageway.


Visitors to the newly completed National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland will nd their ourney fro door to eleator taes the through ore than ust a hallway. To move deeper in to the 575,000 suare foot uilding, isitors traerse the heart of the institution  a long hallway that integrates light and nature with an architectural nesse.


Over three years ago Bill Hellmuth and his architectural team at HOK envisioned sacious wall lanes as a way to ring light and texture to the corridor. Working together with The JBG Companies who own the uilding and general contractors aes . ais onstruction or, the ai of the roect was to contriute a natural essence to the sace in order to righten the hallway and a series of aclit wood anels to clad the walls were developed in order to achieve this.

for designing the walls eeral ideas for materials were explored, wood veneer, resin anels, and stone, ut in the end the owners wanted something interesting. ill elluth saw a iece of wood eneer laminated into glass in the HOK sample lirary and wanted to try to aclight it. t t in well with the alette of war, neutral earth tones in the ase uilding. he loy and hallway design was ulti urose to guide users fro the front door to the elevator cores, to highlight views of the natural landscae features on the roerty and to ring a sense of nature and life into the sace. s the satial design eoled,  designed a funnelshaed lan that opened toward the pond and oriented users towards the elevators.

glass and aclighting it was a challenge, coents aowsi.  was ale to roide a turney solution y coing up with the glass and lighting systems, engineering the design and installing it. The results look exactly like what Hellmuth had intended.


he wood surface was the driing eleent in the concetual design of the wall and seeral anufacturing styles and wood arieties were considered for the roect. he reuireents were real wood eneer, cut thin enough to transit light, aout 0 x 0 anel sie, and a attern and colour that t the design concet, adds aowsi, only  esign was ale to provide the laminated panel that achieved all these goals. Recognising the strong tie to an authentic aterial,  scoured the world for the erfect natural eneer to eet the criteria and found a oetic t. he wood secies
