Terex provides lift in Hawaii


Buckner Company, based in Graham, North Carolina, USA, has spent the last year using its 660-tonne capacity Terex CC2800-1 NT lattice boom crawler crane to erect wind turbines on the US Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Maui for renewable energy firm RMT Inc of Madison, Wisconsin, USA.


Hawaii state law mandates that by 2030 at least 70 percent of its power needs must come from renewable resources.


Carrying 146.5-tonne transformers, the Scheuerle InterCombi trailer with its 650 mm axle compensation coped admirably with the rough roads along the Nile.


ETAL barges transformers along the River Nile


from two Egyptian Red Sea ports to the Giza North Power Station, northwest of Cairo, using a selection of Scheuerle InterCombi trailers developed to handle heavy weight loads. ETAL provides a number of heavy lift logistics services to its customers and guarantees on-time transportation services to its customers, even if the circumstances are challenging – and in this case, a company spokesman noted, they were in fact very difficult.


H Daunting route


A first survey of the prospective route proved that the only way to get the heavy transformers from the landing ports to the job site involved barging the loads along the Nile River and finally transporting them to the job site on Scheuerle InterCombi trailers. The six transformers, each weighing 146.5 tonnes and measuring 7.42 m x 4.31 m x 5.1 m, made the transport solution a tough task, due to the difficult road conditions. challenged the equipment being used – but this proved to be no problem for the InterCombi with its 650 mm axle compensation, the ETAL spokesman said. The transport started in the Egyptian ports of Sokhna and Adabiya on the Red Sea. The first destination was the Tibin jetty on the Nile, where the transformers were brought using 14 axle lines of Scheuerle InterCombi trailers.


River barge


At Tibin, the transformers were loaded on a river barge using the heavy lift capacity of a crawler crane. The barge then moved the transformers up the Nile to a temporary jetty constructed at Khatatba, an offloading facility built especially for ETAL near Giza power station, from where the each load was transported to the job site. Regardless of the uneven roads or


extreme temperatures experienced in the desert, ETAL pointed out that the InterCombi platform trailers proved capable of dealing with the challenge of both long-distance transport on the road and the hot weather operating conditions.

The Kaheawa project consisted of 14 turbine installations and according to Kevin Long, Buckner’s heavy lift project manager, the plan was to erect a turbine and move the crane under its own power to the next pad site without having to disassemble the equipment. The Terex CC2800-1 NT has a track width of only 5.3 m, which allowed Bucker to navigate the tight roads between the turbines without damaging the protected surrounding environment.


Large 5 m x 1.4 m front and rear outrigger pads worked in conjunction with two hydraulically operated side 3 m x 2.4 m outrigger pads to give the stability required for lifting the turbines. In a previous Hawaii project, the Terex CC 2800-1 NT was used to install 30 larger 2.3 MW turbines, which required a maximum lift capacity of 95.2 tonnes. To ensure the turbines continue to work at maximum efficiency, Buckner will keep the Terex CC 2800-1 NT on Oahu for five years.
