You must take action straightaway. If your goal is less time in the offi ce arrange an afternoon off each week starting now. Then set in place a schedule for the other actions on your list. Set short-term goals that will lead towards your ultimate goal of your perfect week within 12 months. Some who heard my GA talk quickly persuaded themselves of reasons why this exercise wouldn’t work for them. “My situation is different to yours” one might say or “you were already doing well, I’m starting from a worse position”, “I can’t fi nd good staff”, and so on. Try to avoid falling into this trap of stopping before you even begin. I’ve now used the exercise repeatedly with great success. If you use it wisely it can work wonders for you too. The major stumbling block for most, in progressing towards our goals, is very often ourselves. The ideas we have in our head

about the world, about other people and about ourselves are just that: ideas. They are all made up from our own perspective. Learning to adjust your perspective is incredibly useful. I’m not saying you should see the world through rose-tinted glasses but seeing obstacles as challenges rather than dead ends is essential to overcoming them – if you want to conquer mountains, become a mountaineer not a mountain spotter.

As the exercise begins to work for you, you

may fi nd your vision changes over time so go back and review your goals, especially as you achieve and celebrate targets.

Good luck with using the Looking Back From Perfect exercise and do let me know how you get on.

This piece is a shortened version of the exercise I’ve taken many new greetings card publishers through at The Ladder Club seminars over the years – though it works for any business and in personal lives too. ● To book a place at this year’s Ladder Club event on October 25 or 26, email waiteandtaitbakery@ hotmail.com or call Trudi or Pauline at the Lynn Tait Gallery on 01702 480180.

● Pretty perfect – if your perfect week is on a beach somewhere then go and have it now. Living on a beach every day for the rest of your life has got to be one of the most achievable goals for Westerners in today’s world. Just be sure it will give you everything you need to live a fulfilling life on an ongoing basis.
