As one of the organisers of Meldreth Local History Group’s Heritage Lottery Funded project, it was a relief when the first weekend of test pitting went well and the months of hard work and preparation paid off.

Over 50 volunteers each day worked to discover what lies beneath our feet. For most of us, it was the first time we had been involved in this kind of project. We learnt new skills, made new friends and above all, had fun.

Having seen what it is all about, more people have come forward; offering to volunteer to help or putting their garden forward for a test pit. Some participants enjoyed the weekend so much that they are hoping to volunteer to work on archaeological digs elsewhere.

Reports from two volunteers are included in this issue. If you missed the test pits last month, then please have a look around when we next dig some on 6th and 7th July. We are all keen to know what will be found next!
