A10 Safer Cycle Path Ride

The A10 Cycle Ride on 16th May was a great success. We organised two rides, one from Trumpington Park and Ride and the other from Royston Station. There were 118 riders who signed in which showed the great need for a good off-road route.

The first ride from Trumpington proceeded across Trumpington Meadows using a rural off road route that will be opened up later this year by the developer. It then followed the cycle path through Harston. The riders used the pedestrian gates at Foxton crossing before following the path to Dunsbridge Turnpike where they crossed the A10. This point was chosen because it had good visibility and led to the old road.

Oliver Heald the MP for the Royston area came to the start of the second ride at Royston Station. The ride went via the cycleways near Burns Road to the new underpass at Coombes Hole. The riders were able to see the new sculptures at the end of the path. The ride then followed the path to the A505. The crossing at this point is difficult and it took some time to cross safely. It then followed the path and crossed the A10 near Greenlow Kennels before continuing through to Melbourn.

Both rides met at Phillimore Garden Centre, which was made available by special permission of Mr Clark the owner, for refreshments. There was an opportunity for contact with the Police Commissioner for Cambridgeshire who attended with his wife. There was a great gathering of every type of cyclist. Nearly 120 cyclists and numerous supporters enjoyed the perfect weather. There was media support from all the local papers, Radio Cambridgeshire, Heart Radio, Anglia TV and BBC East. Thanks go out to the huge number of people and organisations who supported the ride.

The ride succeeded in focusing attention on the need for better infrastructure for cyclists. There has subsequently been a meeting with Sustrans (the sustainable transport charity) where the need for a safe crossing over the A505 at Royston was considered.

Some great photographs from the ride can be seen on our website, www.a10corridorcycle.com.
