Melbourn and Meldreth Women’s Group

Our meeting in May was held in Holy Trinity Meeting Room where 23 members gathered to hear Christopher and Janet South take us on a tour around the world. No slide show, no computer and no pictures!! Instead they drew on a selection of their memories and recalled them to us with great detail.

We were handed a piece of paper with a selection of 24 intriguing titles and asked to choose some. The titles that were chosen were:

   

Shoes, shoes, shoes A light meal in Dominica

The awful thing we did in Moscow One marvellous morning in Peru

I won’t tell you any more about their talks as I would not want it to spoil your pleasure if you hear them again. Suffice to say they are all different and the titles don’t give too much away!

At the beginning Christopher and Janet shared with us that they had been affected by the tsunami on Boxing Day some eight years ago. They had a connection with a fishing town in the affected area and were devastated to hear that in two minutes some 5000 people had died. They were due to go to the area in January and went ahead with their trip. It became a working holiday among the devastation that was left. They set up a project that was able to pick up individuals and families that the larger charities were perhaps unable to do. Subsequently they heard of a Buddhist lady who wanted to educate “brainy” girls from poor families or ones from the country. This lady built a hostel for the girls and she was really stepping out by doing this as traditionally education would be only for boys. Janet and Christopher have now become part of this project and all the funds they raise go towards it. They were able to tell us that three of their girls have now qualified to train as doctors!

If you would like to know more about this they can be contacted on 07778 430313, janetsouth@btinternet.com or at Osborne Cottage, Little Chesterford, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB10 1TS.

Anne Harrison gave a vote of thanks for a really enjoyable evening and gave a cheque which will be given to the charity. Members also contributed by putting money on a plate.
