PRAIRIE POST- SPECIAL AREAS - June 2013 - 3 Hanna volunteers help raise funds for big projects

BY ROSE SANCHEZ — rsanchez@prairiepost.com

Since 2002 a small group of people in Hanna have been working quietly and diligently to ensure funding can be in place for some large projects to benefit the community as a whole. The Hanna Community Initiatives Association (CIA) was formed in the fall of 2002. “The association was formed as it was felt there was a need for a group to help, assist, promote, plan and execute events and opportunities in the Town of Hanna and surrounding area,” explains Dean Viste, a director with the group. Seven people make up the executive of the association, but it does grow depending on the size of the project. The only criteria to be involved is that the person has to be a “do’er”. “The Hanna CIA is unique in that once we pick a cause, we pull together, work to succession and go back to our regular day to day (lives),” says Viste. There have been a few projects undertaken by the CIA since inception. In 2002, the group took on a dinner and auction event to raise money for the Hanna Skate Board Park. Then in 2006, the group partnered with the Town of Hanna to host a dinner and auction gala evening that helped raise money for the outdoor swimming pool. The latest project taken on by the CIA was helping the Town raise funds for the new Hanna Regional Community Services Centre, which is now known as Centennial Place. Fundraising work started in 2010, explains Viste, and the campaign was completed in January 2012. The 16,000-square-foot facility opened in November 2011. The multi-purpose

building is a place where seniors, youth and those in between can enjoy both recreational and cultural activities. The CIA was asked to raise $500,000

for the facility, but in fact, was able to exceed that amount raising $837,000. “It was the largest fundraising campaign in Hanna’s history and the total raised was done so in tough economic times,” says Viste. That fundraising success is directly

related to the work put in by the volunteers. The CIA's fundraising team spent about 4,200 hours on the project. Their work included asking corporations and businesses offering opportunities for naming rights through special presentations, open houses for oil and gas companies, asking service clubs and organizations for contributions, reaching out to families and individuals, as well as former residents and alumni, square foot sales, materials gift in kind and a huge gala dinner/auction. Members of the CIA created all of the printed materials, posters, brochures, Power Point presentations and a 12.5- minute video. Creating that content took eight months, but was worth the effort. With that project completed, members

of the association are enjoying their much-deserved rest. They try to only focus on larger projects which benefit more people, especially ones that will help youths.

“Hanna is a small town.We need to fight to live and survive to help it grow,” says Viste. “The Hanna CIA is a group of people that really care and want to make a difference. Hanna's motto is ‘Worth the Drive’.We think it is more than that. Our motto is ‘Worth the Live’.”
