12 - PRAIRIE POST - SPECIAL AREAS - June 2013 Battle of Alberta right in Hanna July 13

BY TIM KALINOWSKI What happens when you put a bunch of Calgary

Flames fans in the same space as a bunch of Edmonton Oilers fans? Why a friendly game of golf, of course. At least

that was the idea behind Hanna’s Battle of Alberta charity golf tournament, according to founder Sammy Kemaldean. But the Battle of Alberta isn’t just any old golf tournament. “It’s all about fun,” says Kemaldean. “If you’re going to take this seriously, you might as well not even bother to do it.” One hundred and ten golfers took part in last

year’s inaugural tournament, and Kemaldean expects even greater numbers this year. During the 18-hole tournament Flames fans compete against Oilers fans for bragging rights.Winners get to hold up a replica of the Stanley Cup and parade it around town in triumph. Losers are subjected to a small

dose of humiliation. “The losing team will have to stand on either side with their golf clubs crossed as the winning team passes underneath,” says Kemaldean. He expects like in a regular hockey game there will be some trash-talking back and forth, but you better not get caught. “We’re going to have a person in a ref ’s uniform, and he’s going to write you down for a penalty. And he’s going to take your ball off the tee, and throw it and say: ‘Here’s your drive from there’,” explains Kemaldean. And what about others who show up who are not of

a Flame or Oiler persuasion? Kemaldean says all are welcome, but those coming in other team jerseys have to choose to play for either Edmonton or Calgary, and be prepared for a loud reception. “You can be anyone’s fan,” confirms Kemaldean. “Last year, several guys showed up wearing Vancouver and Leafs jerseys. You could hear all the boos and calls from a long ways away.” Kemaldean, who owns Hanna Pizza and Steakhouse, says by starting the Battle of Alberta he hoped to create a fun and exciting event the whole region could enjoy, while at the same time raising money to support a good cause. Proceeds from last year’s tournament went to support the Hanna Golf and Country Club which was coming off a rough year. This year, the tournament will be raising money to support the STARS Air Ambulance service. Kemaldean explains why the

Battle of Alberta committee chose STARS as this year’s donor recipient. “Because we are so isolated

here, STARS comes to help our community quite often, and they do a great job. Whether they save a life in Hanna, or anywhere else — it’s worth it.” This years Battle of Alberta

charity golf tournament will take place at the Hanna Golf

Last year’s Battle of Alberta was a good time with many of the participants having fun in one form or another.

and Country Club. It’s $60 per player, but that also includes beer and pizza for supper. Kemaldean hopes, just like last year, many will make their way up to Hanna to renew old hockey rivalries, support a great cause and, most importantly, have one heck of a good time. “Last year, we had so much fun, and we’re going to do some really silly things this year to make it even more fun,” says Kemaldean. “It was really something to see last year with 110 golfers wearing all kinds of jerseys. We hope to end up with 144 golfers this year. It’s fantastic because the Battle of Alberta combines hockey with golf and friendship.” The Battle of Alberta is set to go for July 13.
