Youngstown ready to celebrate Centennial with events July 19-21

BY ROSE SANCHEZ — rsanchez@prairiepost.com

It’s going to be a full

weekend of activities in Youngstown as the community gets ready to celebrate its centennial July 19-21. About a dozen

volunteers have spent more than a year planning the celebration and it’s a great reason for former residents to head back to the community to renew acquaintances and celebrate the past with the theme of Welcome Home. “Everybody got together and threw a

bunch of ideas around,” says Robert Blagen, about the centennial planning. He is a co-chair of the organizing committee. Events start on July 19 with

registration at the hall from 5-8 p.m. Followed by a barbecue supper from 6-7:30 p.m. That costs $5 per person. Those who attend can spend the evening visiting and listening to old-time music. Saturday’s events kick off with a pancake breakfast at the hall from 8-10 a.m., again for $5 per person. A parade gets underway at 11 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies at 2 p.m. The afternoon also features a show and shine on main street and beer gardens.A horse pull takes place from 2:30-4 p.m. and there will be children’s activities in Centennial Park all afternoon including bouncy castles, mini tractors, a sand pile treasure hunt and a sprinkler park. Children require a $5 activity bracelet in order to take part. There will also be a youth activity in the evening which also requires

a $5 bracelet. Roast beef will be served at the hall

from 5-7 p.m. At a cost of $15 per person or $7.50 for children 10 and under. Then participants can dance to the Chevelles from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Jock MacKinnon Memorial Recreation Centre. The cost is $20 each for those 18 and older only. Sunday’s activities include a pancake

breakfast at the hall from 8-10 a.m. and a non-denominational church service starting at 11 a.m. The afternoon can be spent visiting and taking in the second round of the horse pull from 1-3 p.m.

During the weekend individuals can also take the history walk. There will be signs up all over the town telling the history of various businesses and houses including the hospital. The hospital is still standing although it sits vacant. The weekend is possible thanks to fundraising prior to the celebration including raffles, says Blagen, along with a few generous donations from some individuals.
