Higher National Certifi cate / Diploma
(HNC/D) in Art and Design (MED34918) This Higher Education course offers a progression route towards work-based qualifi cations and employment. You will follow a syllabus that prepares practitioners to play an active and effective role in the fi eld of contemporary art and design. You will build skills and explore a range of more and less traditional materials, techniques and processes, through guided workshops and independent studio activity. You will also study a rigorous programme of art historical, critical and contextual study. Practical tuition can cover areas from printmaking to multiple approaches to drawing; Computer Aided Design to traditional and non-traditional sculptural techniques; collage to site specifi c installation; photography and time based media to text work.
HCC’s HNC/D skills and knowledge development is intended to be vocationally and academically challenging and progressively responsive to learners’ emerging practical aptitudes and intellectual concerns. The course consists of eight core units plus eight specialist units. It can be taken over two years and is equivalent to two years of a degree. Core Units: Visual Communication in Art and Design, Ideas Generation and Development in Art and Design, Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design, Design, Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation. Entry requirements: 3 A Levels or an Art qualifi cation at Level 3, or signifi cant experience working in an Art and Design environment. Possible next steps: Final year of your Degree or employment.
