Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Art and Design (MED10515) The course has been developed to prepare you for the world of the art and design practitioner – inspiring you to engage with authentic art and design practice. It consists of six core units plus two specialist units and is equivalent to 4 GCSEs. Core Units: Introduction to Specialist Pathways in Art and Design, Creative Project in Art and Design, Communicating Ideas in 2D, Communicating Ideas in 3D, Developing an Art and Design Portfolio and Investigating Contextual References in Art and Design. This involves you becoming familiar with the language, practices and processes of the art and design professional, while developing your own creative skills and expression. You will study the formal elements of art and design (form, line, tone, texture and colour) and study a range of skills using two and three dimensional media including: drawing, painting, textiles, fashion, sculpture, 3D design, moving image, interactive media, digital media and the history of art and design. Entry requirements: You will be expected to present a portfolio of your work and have 4 GCSEs at grade A-E including English and maths. Where appropriate, you may also have a College assessment. Possible next steps: BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design (level 3). Length of course (weeks): 36 Hours per week: 10
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art
and Design (MED10195) This two-year course allows you to study a broad range of two and three dimensional art disciplines representing the major career pathways in art and design – leading to increased specialisation in your chosen subject in the second year. You will build skills in the use of the visual language through subjects such as drawing, painting, printmaking, fashion and textiles sculpture, 3-D design, graphic design and digital media. We place a strong emphasis on developing ideas and engagement with historical and contemporary art practice – with visits to museums and galleries and the opportunity to participate in ‘live’ projects with professional art practitioners as well as a study trip abroad. The course consists of six core units plus twelve specialist units. It is taken over two years and is equivalent to 3 A Levels. Core Units: Visual Recording in Art and Design, Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design, Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design, Communication Through Art and Design and Contextual influences in Art and Design. Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grade A-C. Plus, in addition to showing a genuine interest in the subject, you will need to show a portfolio of your work. Possible next steps: Art and Design Degree and HND courses such as: graphic design, product design, textile design, fine art, interactive media and interior design.
