but it wasn’t to be as he and Johnson dueled throughout the round.

Dufner hit into the water on No. 9 and then on 12 Johnson came very close to getting a penalty when his bunker shot careened off the lip of the bunker and nearly hit him. But Johnson recovered with a 12-footer for birdie on 14, his ninth one-putt of the afternoon, to take the lead.

His lead increased when on 15 Dufner drove into a fairway bunker and played a 9-iron shot from 142 yards that hit the green, kicked left, and found the water hazard. His recovery shot ran across the green and he wound up making a triple bogey, leaving him four strokes back with three holes to play—a tough spot against a player as solidly consistent as Johnson. “It wasn’t meant to be today,” said Dufner,

who wound up shooting a disappointing 74. “It’s not bad luck. It’s just bad play.” In the end, Johnson acknowledged the reality of the outcome.

“The bottom line is it doesn’t matter,” Johnson said. “I was lucky.”

And good and lucky is a tough double to beat. ■

Course Insight COLONIAL COUNTRY CLUB

Built in 1936, this classic layout, which was designed by John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell, has been acclaimed since its inception as a tough but fair challenge and always ranks high in any respected listing of America’s top courses. Colonial hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, which marked the first time the event was held south of the Mason-Dixon Line and was won by Craig Wood. The Colonial National Invitation Tournament was launched in 1946, beginning the longest-running event of the PGA TOUR on the same site. Colonial also hosted the 1975 PLAYERS Championship won by Al Geiberger and the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open won by Meg Mallon.

In 2012, TOUR players voted Colonial as one

of their top five favorite courses to play each year (Golf World), and its fifth hole is renowned as one of the best par fours on TOUR. Colonial’s challenging, traditional layout was once again named by GOLF Magazine in its “100 Greatest Courses in the United States” in 2011. Golfweek magazine placed Colonial on its “America’s Best Classic Courses” list in 2009.
