featuring pieces from ten different films. On the front of the booklet is a spooky photo (shown here) from Kurosawa's 1991 movie "Wun Tin Lung": an homage to the Glasgow street philosopher Rab C Nesbitt (Are you sure about this? Ed.) In this scene, the bandage-head Wun is about to yell whic, the
Google translation of "I will tell you this, boy". For collectors of movie soundtracks on LP, the quality of the sleeve is often as important as the condition of the disc or even the quality of the music or the film itself. The front cover may feature a still from the movie or a classic marketing image, which is completely lost on the tiny scrap of paper that one gets in the front of the annoying CD case. Discounting movies with Beatles connections, two of the most valuable OSTs on LP are " Barbarella" (1968) and "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" (1970) neither of which are ever likely to feature in a list of "100 Movies To See Before You Die" (although for reasons that I do not care to go into, "Barbarella" remains a personal favourite of mine). Moving on swiftly, we have a couple of soundtrack LPs with striking covers. The first one is "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" from 1985 featuring (mostly) music
by triple Oscar-winner Maurice Jarre (father of Jean-Michel). Also we have Jarre's original 1963 OST in mono from "Lawrence of Arabia", featuring the haunting image of Lawrence in Arab headgear with his face in deep shadow. This recording has serious technical limitations and is not complete, so you would do better to buy this LP in order to frame the sleeve and then get a later restored/remastered/complete CD version - but take care, only in those versions featuring the image shown here is Jarre actually doing the conducting. Finally, credit where it's due: the inspiration for this article came directly from Howard Goodall's
recent 6-part TV series on BBC2: "The Story of Music". In the final episode, he suggests that the movie score is the new "classical music". If you missed this thought- provoking series, you can catch up with it on YouTube. There is a TASS Books & Music Sale at the Anchorage Centre most Tuesday mornings. Also, on the first Saturday of each month, TASS
