Gardiner’s Diary - June by Craig Gardiner of Gardiner’s World
SUMMER is here! Hanging basket, con- tainer and bedding plants will soon be filling gardens and patios with colour and a lot of your attention will now need to be paid to prolonging and getting the best of these blooms. It’s likely now that during spells of warm, dry weather hanging baskets and containers will need watering on a daily basis, and even twice daily if the sun really heats up. Beds and borders will also need to be taken into consideration on the watering round during periods of prolonged dry weather. Watering is best done either
first thing in the morning or during the evening when the sun is at its weakest. Watering during the day can result in the water being evaporated before the plants have had a proper fill or the sun’s rays being magnified through droplets on leaves, causing scorch damage.
Regular use of fertiliser will also help to keep flowers looking their best. Check the back of the packet/bottle for guidelines on frequency and volume of applications. Deadheading fading or dead flowers from all plants will help to keep plants looking healthy and encourage more blooms throughout the summer months.
Growth spurts will be noticeable all around the garden for the next few months. Weeding will need to be carried out on a regular basis to stop them taking hold, and lawns will need cutting on a weekly basis.

Climbing plants such as Clematis and Honeysuckle are likely to need training around their frames and all tall-growing plants should be staked to protect them from being battered by the wind.
Plants raised from seeds in the greenhouse should now be planted out, along with any remaining salads in the vegetable garden for staggered harvesting. Early sown salads and potatoes won’t need much more time before they’re ready for harvest, and any fruit bushes or trees that haven’t already been netted
G
should now be protected from the greedy eyes and beaks of birds.
Looking forward, already, to the end of this year and the beginning of the next, winter bedding plants such as Winter Pansies and spring bedding plants such as Bellis Perennis should be sown between now and the end of July for timely flowering. And finally, looking back to this past spring, don’t forget to prune spring flowering shrubs and remove dead matter from spring containers.
