Black Headed Great Tit


In my garden I have a few Camellias which have done remarkably well this time, so the unusually adverse weather may have actually been of benefit to these plants. One Camellia I have is called Shiro Habisuke which translates from the Japanese as white and a square-shaped sword it produces lovely white flowers and also has some red flowers as well and last year it produced two types of white flower and a completely red flower. I have a cousin in London who has a Camellia called Lady Vansittart which has done pretty much the same thing. These variations are not uncommon in plants particularly Camellias, Roses and Zonal Pelargoniums (geraniums). The different colours are known as ‘sports’ or chimeras. Sometimes it is possible to propagate by cuttings or layering of these sports to produce a plant that will be different from the parent plant, and that is how some new varieties have originated. In the past as plants have produced a new colour or form people have realised the potential of this as a new variety, and cultivating it to become something new. The roses Climbing Iceberg, and Climbing Ena Harkness are examples of this.

With geraniums they very often produce sports particularly the variegated leaved varieties, I can remember many years ago finding an almost white leaved version of a geranium, which I tried to develop, but the white pigments in the leaves were supressing the natural green chlorophyll which is essential to the growth of all plants so it did not survive.
