Botswana ‘14
In 2014 a group of Explorer Scouts from Devon are going to Maun in Botswana to build a learning centre to be used as a centre where Scouts and orphans from Maun and the surrounding area can go to be taught about the wildlife in the nearby Okavango Delta and the country as a whole. In February they had the
first training camp where they met the other hopefuls wanting to be a part of this expedition. Explorer Scout Nathan Turnock said, “ There are several more of these which we have to attend before we go and we will learn building techniques from the experienced leadership team. We will spend three weeks constructing the building
which will accompany the ablutions block which was completed in 2012 by the ‘Wild in Botswana’ project group. In order to go, we each have to raise £3000 of which £1500 will go towards building materials which will include: timber, blocks, sand, cement and corrugated metal sheets for the roof. We are encouraged to fundraise this money and also gain support from local people and businesses. Up to now I have personally raised nearly £1000 through car
boot sales, raffles and aluminium can collections. If you wouldn’t mind saving your cans from the recycling lorry I will happily collect them from you to help with my fundraising efforts”. If you would like to support this very worthwhile project or have some aluminium cans or foil which need collecting please don’t hesitate to contact Nathan via email at
