SHAHEED MINER MONUMENT FOR PORTSMOUTH

Shaheed Miner is a national monument in Dhaka, Bangladesh, established to commemorate those killed during the Bengali Language Movement demonstrations of 1952. Portsmouth City Council

has allocated a plot of land in Victoria Park for this monument, where a Shaheed Miner, the fifth of its kind in the UK, will be erected.

The Bangladeshi community in Portsmouth will fund the

project, which will cost around £80,000 to complete. The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman invited Portsmouth Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson to visit Altab Ali Park, White Church Lane and Whitechapel High Street, London to see the Shaheed Miner there. n
