MINIMUM WAGE RATE RAISED

THE government has accepted the independent Low Pay Commission’s (LPC) recommendations for this year’s adult and youth National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates. However, the government has concluded that the apprentice rate should be increased rather than frozen as recommended by the LPC. The LPC based this recommendation on concerns about level of compliance with the apprentice rate. From 1 October 2013 the adult rate will

increase by 12p to £6.31 an hour; the rate for 18-20 year olds will increase by 5p to £5.03 an hour and the rate for 16-17 year olds will increase by 4p to £3.72 an hour. The apprentice rate will increase by 3p to £2.68 an hour.

The government says it will be working with employers, apprentices and training providers to improve awareness of rights and responsibilities on pay. Along with this, it will be undertaking focused enforcement work to clamp down on non-compliance by employers of apprentices. n

LORD MAYOR HOLDS BIG CURRY LUNCH

ON April 18th this year the Lord Mayor of London held a Big Curry Lunch. With delicious curry, great wine and beer, the now annual Lunch is an established part of the City calendar, hotly anticipated by all those that attend. The buffet format and informal seating encourages guests to mingle with other city professionals, members of both Houses of Parliament, the Senior Officers of the

British Army, Ambassadors and High Commissioners and the Masters of the City’s Livery Companies. The theme for the 2013 Lunch was ‘The Best of British, to reflect the wonderful events of 2012, including Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and The Paralympics and, of course, to reflect the outstanding service of British soldiers. The event raises money for

ABF The Soldiers Charity. “We continue to hear every day about the loss of life and serious injuries amongst our soldiers. ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is here to help all of them and also those whose service in current operations has had a variety of other negative and unwelcome effects,” says General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE DSO DL President, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. n
