STRAALTECHNIEK UK supply BONDS Foundry Group 2 Special

Heavy Duty Table Blast Machines Northern foundry

group, Bonds, selects Straaltechniek UK’s blasting equipment to help improve its

operational efficiency and its expansion.

Strong international demand for steel castings led the Bonds foundry group to develop a modern, purpose-built foundry on a 10-acre site. New, state-of-the-art equipment – including a blast machine – was required by Bonds CastTech. In addition, the long-established foundry in the group, Bonds Foundry, was in need of a larger blast machine with greater capacity at its North Road facility.

Bonds manufactures a large range of steel castings including valves, pump & compressor casings and castings for the marine, offshore, construction and general engineering sectors, all of which need blasting within a blasting work envelope of 2.5m diameter by 2.0m high as the castings can weigh up to 12 tonnes.

Because the type of machines required was outside the standard machine ranges of most manufacturers, Bonds turned to one of the largest UK manufacturer’s of standard and special wheel and air blasting machines Straaltechniek UK for a bespoke solution to its needs.

Straaltechniek UK offered two Heavy Duty 3 x 22Kw 2.5m x 2.0m High Work Piece Table Blast Machines with Fully refurbished High Performance Long Life Blast Wheels & Dust Extraction Tech- nology incorporated to minimise down time, maintenance and reduce operational costs.

The companies worked closely together to incorporate design changes to improve overall reliability within a heavy duty steel foundry environment. The machines were then manu- factured, assembled and tested to the satisfaction of Bonds in the Straaltechniek UK Factory in Sheffield and also incorporated readily available primary motors, geared reducers, electrical software all specified by the customer.

After an on-time delivery of 16 weeks, the install- ation and commissioning was undertaken by Straaltechniek UK Service & Installation Team at Bonds which enjoyed additional production benefits of dramatically reduced blasting cycle times and improved surface profile of their products.

Jay Dorling (Sales Director) at Straaltechniek UK explained that “more recently many of our customers were nervous of buying special equip- ment ‘flat packed’ from abroad and that the comfort factor of working with an experienced

UK Blast Engineering Company utilising readily available primary items from the UK had won the company significant orders over the last few years”

Jay added “our friends at Bonds liked the fact they could make regular visits to the factory to check on the progress and build quality and discuss any 'after contract' additions they would feel would help reduce their operational costs. We, at Straaltechniek UK always take into consideration the explicit needs of the customer by listening to their problems and the commercial implications of these problems to make sure our offer is a solution that meets these needs and reduces their future operational costs”

Jon Blackett, Group Director, Bonds commented: “When you consider the amount of investment we have put into all areas of the business and, with the blast cleaning and finishing being an integral part of this investment, we had to be sure we were getting good value for money.

“The fact that Straaltechniek UK were a recommended and experienced UK company it made sense to work with them to build the type of equipment that will stand up to the rigours of a heavy duty steel foundry. We also took into consideration the proximity to Straaltechniek which meant that we could send our team to look at the progress of the project every month without incurring overseas travel costs.

Straaltechniek also clearly demonstrated that they had the manufacturing capability and we liked the flexibility of their service division – with eleven mobile engineers offering a 24 hour call out service if required.

“All of this gave the Bonds foundry group the confidence to embark on what has turned out to be a successful part of a major project.”

Straaltechniek UK offer a wide range of Standard & Special Blasting Equipment, Spares and Service as well as utilising their fully equip- ped factory, CNC Machine Shop, Laser & Plasma cutting facilities, 200 Ton Press Break, Fabrication and Assembly.
