Coventry-based global chemicals, sealant and surface coatings

specialist, Norman Hay plc, has honoured the long service of 59

of its employees who between them have amassed 999 years of service.

Held in the magnificent medieval surroundings of St. Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry, staff gathered for a special luncheon and presentation.

Included in the line-up was the company’s Chairman Peter Hay.

Peter, who first joined the group 40 years ago, presented the

long service awards and also received

his own award from the group CEO, Vic Bellanti.

Norman Hay plc has a pedigree spanning over 60 years. The company employs 226 staff across the UK, 137 of which are in Coventry, and has continued to remain committed to its Coventry roots, despite being a global player and supplying customers across five continents.

The company has also recently launched both an apprenticeship and graduate training scheme although the group is no stranger to nurturing young talent.

Three members of staff who work for one of the Norman Hay Group divisions - Surface Technology - are celebrating over 30 years with the company. They include Paul Aston who joined 31 years ago as a ‘jigger’ and is now Quality Manager, Carol Smith who joined the company 38 years ago as an office junior at the age of 16 and is now Credit Control Manager and Steve Hubbard who is now Operations Director for China having originally joined the company in 1986 as a General Operative.

Each serves as an excellent example of the values and ethos of the group which in turn fosters loyalty and commitment.

Paul Aston commented: “It’s good to recognise the people who have been with the company for a long time in this way. Norman Hay is a good company to work for and one which has a real family feel. We are not just a number but a name which is a great motivator.”

Steve Hubbard echoed the sentiment: “Despite the fact that the Surface technology division operates across 11 sites globally it has still managed to maintain a team ethic which is fantastic.”

Chairman Peter Hay was hugely praiseworthy of his staff describing them as the very bedrock of the organisation which has led to the company’s continuing success despite the ever present challenges

within the marketplace. He commented: “Our people are the backbone of the organisation and the heart and soul of the company and it is a great privilege for me to be able to honour so many of our employees in this way. The fact that nearly half have been with us for 10 years and more is testimony to the level of loyalty which is held amongst the workforce

“I operate on the premise that because we spend so much of our life at work then it is important to ensure we enjoy it and it is an ethos which is followed from the boardroom to the shop floor. I want people to wake up in the morning and look forward to coming to work and if you can achieve that everybody wins.”

The Norman Hay Group operates four divisions: “Ultraseal” – the market leader in impregnation chemicals and process equipment; “Surface Technology” – specialists in the development and application of surface treatments with well known brands including Armourcote and ACI; SIFCO ASC, global leaders in selective plating and “NHE” – manufacturing bespoke process plant & equipment.

CEO Vic Bellanti, who this year celebrates 20 years with the business, joined initially as Financial Controller. He describes his time with the group as an interesting journey and one in which he has seen the company grow to become a global player.

He commented: “I am immensely proud of our workforce and it is only right that they be rewarded for their service. They have a fantastic set of skills which helps us to maintain our market leading position within a global marketplace. Our task now is to we ensure that we retain these important skills through our various training schemes. It is extremely exciting to see the young people who are joining us. Whilst they come with a blank canvas, they bring tremendous technical knowledge and can only further reinforce our position within each of the markets in which we operate.” follow us on Twitter @surfaceworldmag
