BOWLING CLUB 2012 WAS AN EVENTFUL YEAR FOR THE ROMFORD CLUB, WHICH MARKED ITS ‘FIRST’ ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF BOWLING WITH FUNDRAISERS, OPEN DAYS, VIP MATCHES… AND A DAY IN EDWARDIAN DRESS WORDS BY STEWART GOODWIN

embers of Gidea Park Bowing Club near Romford, in Essex, raised


£1,000 for local charities during their 2012 centenary season celebrations. The club held fundraisers


throughout the year to raise money for Haven House Children’s Hospice and the Alzheimer society. Bowlers held an “Edwardian


Day”, when they played a match while dressed in clothes that were fashionable in the club’s formation year – 1912. The event was attended by the


Mayor of Havering, Melvin Wallace, and the local media. Throughout the season, Gidea


Park staged five VIP matches with their only defeat coming against Bowls England. They won the Anglia Bowls


Trophy and held a successful tour of the Bournemouth area. The club also held a series


of school open days for local youngsters. These proved to be such a success that they are planned again for this summer. To mark the centenary, club
