to play county bowls. As Marie explained: “Huddersfield play in the county league, but sometimes they struggle for numbers. One time the boys were asked to play. Steven declined but Barry was right up for it. He was so good that the skip recruited him for the next match. He ended up playing three times at the end of last season.” Steven and Barry have also taken part in the


Special Olympics Great Britain, which are held every four years. Their first taste of the games was at Glasgow in 2005, when Barry won gold in his category and Steven won silver – and they won gold playing in the pairs together. When the event was held in Leicester in


2009, Steven won gold and Barry bronze. This year, the games are being held in Bath. However, since they’re using the short mat format of the game, the boys won’t be taking part.


BIG BENEFIT Being involved in bowling has benefited the twins in all sorts of ways. Marie said: “It’s really helped them with their balance and with their spatial awareness, and they are on a level playing field with able- bodied people when they’re playing bowls. “It’s one of the few sports that can offer that kind of equality and opportunity. It’s also developed their social skills, although they’ve never been
