REVIEW Across the Generations

Readers of PCE will have read our series of articles entitled, ’Across the Generations’, which has now been running for a year. We have endeavoured to highlight the way in which years of experience have been passed down through families to the benefit of the present and hopefully the future.

W

e have covered companies across the industry with two paint manufacturers, W&J Leighs (Sherwin Williams) and Jotun

Paints, three painting contractors, FA Clover Ltd, Jack Tighe Ltd and TI Coatings Ltd. In addition to the paint suppliers and the applicators we have also covered two consultancy companies, Chatfield Research Laboratories and the Steel Protection Consultancy. Finally, we covered the quality control company, Elcometer Instruments Ltd. The three painting contracting companies, FA

Clover Ltd, Jack Tighe Ltd and TI Coatings Ltd have long track records with Clovers covering four generations to Jack Tighe and TI Coatings, three generations. Frederick Albert Clover started FA Clover

After the five year restrictions were lifted in 1987 Jack reformed Jack Tighe Ltd, and that company has gone from strength to strength and next year he will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of Jack starting the business in 1954. He was recognised by the Institute of

Corrosion in their 50th anniversary celebration in recognition of the significant impact made to the protective coatings industry worldwide in over 60 years. He was one of only 10 VIPs invited to the celebration which was held at the Thames Barrier in 2009. This put Jack alongside Tony Benn – The
