EDITOR’S COMMENT

PCE’s

horizons and going international! This doesn’t mean that we will be abandoning our roots in Europe, but it does mean that we can bring you all of the exciting developments that are happening in the coatings industry worldwide. With an international approach, it means

T

that we can look at the challenges of coating operations in the largest growth areas (and often hottest) parts of the world such as the Middle East and Africa. We will also be featuring projects in the Tiger economies of the Far East, and with a considerable number of coatings companies based in the Americas, we will also be highlighting the latest technological advances in this area. We will also be featuring what is happening

down under, and in this issue we have an article on how dry film thickness measurement standards have different demands, and individual strengths and weaknesses. It is based on a paper given by Rob Francis, a metallurgist and corrosion and coatings

Exciting Future

his new article in the magazine has been launched specifically to tell you about PCE’s exciting new future. We are expanding our

specialist with over 35 years experience with his own consultancy, R A Francis Consulting Services in Australia. As this issue is going to the Norshipping

exhibition in Oslo, we have also given it a bit of a marine flavour with articles on protecting tidal turbines and how to manage your ship fouling to reduce emissions and save fuel. Maintaining an Icon takes a look at the Thames Barrier’s long term coating protection. In Focus takes a look at Health and Safety

for the Inspector. Dave Horrocks, who has over 31 years in the business, says he has seen some things that are best left unmentioned in terms of Health and Safety in the workplace. In this article he adds some valuable input into the Health and Safety aspects of inspection in the field, and also lays down a basic guide for self protection against grit blasting and painting activities when carrying out inspection duties. The Across the Generations series

concludes with a look back at the companies that we have featured, which included some of the biggest family owned companies in the business.
