A ship is at its fastest and most efficient with a freshly cleaned hull

fouling depends on regular in-water cleaning, which is possible due to the strength of composition. Unlike other coatings such cleaning is allowed by most ports due to the absence of biocides. conference, Hydrex owner Boud Van Rompay said: “Any ship captain knows that his ship is at its fastest and most efficient with a freshly cleaned hull. We definitely see Hard coatings as the way forward for shipping”. International Paints recently announced two

new coatings, one traditional anti-fouling and one biocide-free coating. The new Intercept range is a biocidal linear

polishing polymer antifouling, using their LUBYON® polymer technology to provide a superhydrophilic surface. International promise in-service periods up to 90 months, and claim an average fuel consumption and associated emissions savings of 5% annually compared to typical controlled-depletion polymer antifoulings. The LUBYON coating swells on contact with seawater, helping to smooth out imperfections. The biocide release rate is largely unaffected by seawater temperature. International’s biocide-free Intersleek range is a

fluoropolymer coating designed to operate even when slow or ultra-slow steaming. Paul Robbins, Marine Marketing Director at International Paint said: “Amid record high

Johnson and Johnson, have recently released ECONEA, promoted as the first copper-free marine anti-fouling agent. ECONEA is a water- based ablative antifouling which also replaces most of the noxious solvents found in traditional antifouling paints with water. As a consequence of the absence of copper, ECONEA coatings are compatible with substrates including aluminium. ECONEA uses zinc compounds and an arylpyrrole compound (an analgaesic and anti- inflammatory agent which acts on the nervous system) as its biocidal constituents. ECONEA has been approved as an antifouling

preservative by the United States Environmental Protection Agency since 2007 (EPA Reg. No. 43813-27 and 43813-52). West Marine, the largest specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories in the US, recently announced at the Miami International Boat Show in February this year that ECONEA-based CFA Eco antifouling paint is the winner of their fourth annual Green Product of the Year Award. ECONEA is supported as a new active
