ANALYSIS

presentation of the mean values including the scatter ranges of individual objects in a rank order. Irregularities within an entire inspection can be recognized immediately using this option. Exporting the data in a variety of ways provides the user with the flexibility of meeting any of the Coating Technical File (CTF) accepted formats. The Fischer DataCentre® is unique in that

it is also compatible with other inspection instrumentation. An example of a compatible instrument is the SaltSmart®, designed for the detection of invisible soluble surface salt prior to paint and coating application. Testing and reducing invisible salt contamination from the surface prior to coating application creates a long-lasting coating and prevents corrosion. Like the FMP® series, SaltSmart® stores the results of the tests in the instrument for later download. Specific report templates in Fischer DataCentre® can be created for SaltSmart® readings. This reduces transcription errors and provides a legal electronic record of the data with time and date stamps. SaltSmart® has been tested to NACE SP0508 and ISO 8502 standards. Furthermore, it will be included in the “SSPC Technology Guide 15” detailing salt contamination. Additional standards organisations such as the IMO reference the NACE SP0508 standard for compliance.

CONCLUSION Changing a process can be difficult. Most of us are reluctant to change and only do so when we

have no choice. Drastic increases of inspection requirements, such as the introduction of IMO PSPC, necessitate process improvement initiatives. The number of required readings and the time it takes to manually administer all of the paperwork requires more efficiency. Capabilities of instrumentation have advanced dramatically to meet these demands. These capabilities enable the inspectors to adhere to documentation requirements, modify forms and follow visual and text guidance of the inspection process. Results are uploaded and evaluated quickly and easily in a paperless format, mistake-free. A return on investment for these capabilities is certainly measurable.
