Treatment with POLINOX-Protect improves the corrosion resistance of Stainless Steel against all forms of corrosion at tempera- tures lower than 220°C. The main forms of corrosion are pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress induced crack corrosion and temperature induced discolourations.


In asingle process POLINOX-Protect enables you to stop ongoing corrosion, removes any corrosion by-products and provide ahigher corrosion resistance.


Due to absence of restricted chemicals in its composition and any high environmental or health risks in is application, POLINOX- Protect can be applied on site without restrictions. Repeated application for maintenance or refurbishment can stabilise the corrosion resistance of stainless steel even under harsh conditions, high salt environments, for which it would not be sufficiently high otherwise.


New Environmentally Friendly Brightening for Brass


In addition to our CuproChem process for copper POLIGRAThas now developed BrassChem which is the latest development in the field of chemical polishing for Brass. It is an environmentally friendly process with low process costs and ahigh performance.


In atwo step immersion process BrassChem provides asurface quality and deburring potential similar in quality,tothat which could previously only be achieved by electro-polishing.The process comprises of atwo steps, first immersion in activation bath then followed by apolishing step. The total product surface area in contact with BrassChem will be polished without any of the common imperfections such as shadows, or gassing or variation from the throwing power.The treatment time is in the range of acouple of minutes.


Both the activation and polishing bath chemicals are supplied as concentrates. The activation bath is mixed in a concentration of 10% and the polishing bath with 0,5% to 2,0%. Additionally 30% strength hydrogen peroxide is added in a quantity of 60g/l to the activation and 200g/l to the polishing bath. Aspecial patented proprietary stabiliser reduces the consummation of hydrogen peroxide. The polishing bath operates with uniform quality up to ametal content of 40 g/l. Due to low concentration of chemicals in activation and polishing bath and to the low viscosity of the liquids, the consummation of chemicals by drag out is very low and only afraction of that if compared to electro-polishing.


Correspondingly low are the costs for replenishing and waste treatment.


BrassChem is free from sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid or phosphoric acid and of their salts. The chemicals are non-poisonous and biologically degradable. The process works at temperatures up to 35°C and does not release nasty smells or poisonous fumes.


Following neutralisation of the rinse water with caustic soda only the metal hydroxides and no other salts remain as solids. The metal hydroxides are suitable for recycling. The extremely low concentration of chemicals in the waste water after separation of the metal hydroxides allow the release of the treated water to the drain.


BrassChem is supplied as concentrates for Activation and Polishing.The concentrates are mixed with hydrogen peroxide and water by the end user.

now,metal finishing companies around the world have


searched for the ideal solution for the


corrosion protection


of lightweight carbon steel through the use of zinc coatings


These systems have included zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) and ‘Sherardising’ but over the years it was discovered that: (a) the plating process left alow-build zinc finish that would not tolerate long outdoor exposures; (b) HDG had limitations on metal thickness; (c) Sherardising was limited to the smaller,solid metal objects like fasteners that would not become damaged or distorted during the tumbling process or would succumb to the heat used during the coating process.


’Zinganising’ offers ahighly effective alternative. It is amatt-finish film-galvanizing system that has now become well established in 52 countries around the world. Zinganising has many distinct advantages over the other

systems, namely: (a) it is done at ambient temperatures; (b) there is no restriction on metal section; (c) it can be used on both carbon steels and on cast iron; (d) it can be over-coated directly with certain powders and wet paints without the need for etch primers; (e) it can be used on immersed steelwork and on exposed structures; (f) it is used successfully on fasteners for North Sea offshore use.


For35years the system has been used very successfully,but with one important stipulation: the metal has to be blast-cleaned to aclean- liness standard of SA2.5 (SSPC-SP10) and with ablast-profile average of Rz65µm (ISO 8301- 1) and aroughness factor of Ra12.5 (8503-2). (continued on page 38)
