Corina, who established her Portland, Oregon, business in the fall of 2010, says it was im- portant to her to set up shop in the community she knew.

"I was born and raised in Portland. I am one of the only African American- owned pet grooming busi- nesses in the state of Ore- gon,” says Corina. “My employees and my customers are a diverse group. I have created a place through ani- mals where we can all come.”

She adds, “I wanted a business that would service the community and the pets where I live. I wanted a place where pet owners could take their pets and feel a friendly, family oriented, inviting shop.” She found just the spot, a cute corner building with a classy exterior and colorful interior.

Indeed, Corina has succeeded in creating a professional and welcoming environment. Pet owners can sit in the lobby, sip coffee and watch TV while they wait for their pets to be beautified. And, her staff has a combined 30 years of grooming experience. “We only use top-of-the- line equipment and products, too,” emphasizes Corina.

She’s found one of the best ways to draw customers in is by placing ads in her community-based newspaper.

For Dogs from All Walks of Life The word “show” may be in the name of her salon and

boutique, but that’s not because Corina’s business is centered on show dogs. She’s clear that it’s because all dogs who enter her shop are treated as special as if they were dogs being groomed for the show ring.

“It was important for me to establish a grooming shop that was family ori- ented and open to all breeds. I wanted to offer a place where pets would be treated with care and respect during their grooming experience. I have dogs, have always had dogs, love dogs, and am so happy to get to work with pets everyday," she explains.

“We treat all pets with care and respect and groom all breeds

and sizes.” Her business tagline is “Yo dawg is gonna look like a show dawg.” And they do, cats, too.

The Cat’s Meow

“Cat grooming is something we specialize in,” says Corina. “It takes a lot of patience and tenderness to groom a cat successfully. We care. We truly care. We form friendships with the pets’ owners and aim to pro- vide long term grooming for their beloved pets.”

Show Dogs Grooming Salon and Boutique also carries general pet supplies, such as treats, dog/cat food, leashes, collars and specialty health care products for skin, eyes and ears. “We offer various special treat- ments to add to your pet's grooming services to cover any special needs,” says Corina.

She operates the northeast Portland business with co- owner Terrell Brandon.
