Ultimately her newfound passion for dogs led to the founding of her business, K9 Bytes, in 2005.

Finding Her Niche

Shannon already had a website designed to sell the crafty items she was making at the time. Some of her homemade pet products were included in the inventory. When she tracked the sales, it became evident that customers were most strongly drawn to those cute and clever pet items.

So she switched gears. “I redesigned the site to emphasize the pet products and have grown from that,” says Shannon.

K9 Bytes offers– and Shannon makes -- fabric dog collars, dog leashes and cat collars. “I enjoy making collars that are func- tional and fun,” says Shannon, adding that she wishes all her customers knew she carefully makes each item by hand.

Don’t Make Me Go Look at Puppies

Shannon Barnard was a cat person. That is until, as she recounts it, “My husband talked me into ‘Just going to see the puppies.’ ”

She hadn’t wanted to go. “I didn’t want to because I knew we’d come home with one, and I liked cats, not dogs. We did come home with a puppy, and now I can’t imagine living life without a dog,” adds Shannon.

Handmade Growth

Shannon is particularly proud of making her “kitchen-table” pet product ideas a reality and growing a hobby into a success- ful online business.

She’s most pleased when “a client sends me a picture of their pet proudly wearing one of my collars and includes a note about how much they like the collars.”
