the aerospace industry.Itinvolved the refurbish- ment of abunded bulk chemical storage area. This was a“tricky”operation, according to SFE, and included the removal of large bulk storage tanks from the storage area, the preparation and application of achemical-resistant floor and wall coating, followed by the re-installation of the storage tanks onto new fabricated platforms and the fitting of splash screens.

Other recent projects have included the installation of anew specialised drying oven, designed and manufactured to satisfy NADCAP aerospace requirements; the manufacture and installation of anew fume extraction system for achemical etching line; and the refurbishment and supply of process lines and tanks for anumber of other metal finishing plants operated by high-end precision engineering companies. One of these involved the lead-lining of the process tanks – SFE is one of the few remaining companies in Europe to offer this kind of lead-lining service.

Comments David Addison: “Wepride ourselves on the level of experience we have in the plating and surface finishing field and, with over 100 plant design and installations under our belt, nothing can or has been overlooked by the SFE team.”

It is with sadness that we report the death of Jim Addison, awell known figure in metal finishing who worked as an engineer in the industry for over 50 years.

Jim lost an 18-month long battle with cancer at the age of 77. He leaves behind his wife

Jean –towhom he was married for 56 years –three children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

During his time in the finishing industry, he worked as an installation manager with M&T Cruickshanks, as Works Manager

NiTEC UK Ltd have reported an influx of orders requesting electroless nickel

plating for grooved rolls used in the

packaging industry.

Chesterfield based electroless nickel plating specialists NiTEC are able to plate objects of up to 20 tonnes in weight, the only company in Europe with the capacity to plate such large components.

The grooved rolls, typically used in packaging, can weigh up to 5tonnes and measure 12 metres in length. As packaging material passes over the rolls at speeds of 1200 metres aminute, these huge components have particularly tight tolerances.

Commercial Director of NiTEC UK,Marcus Hill, said: “Grooved rolls are enormous pieces of equipment. We are the only electroless nickel plating company in Europe to be able to handle such alarge component, so

naturally we see anumber coming through our doors.”

Electroless nickel is the only type of plating suitable for this purpose because it provides auniform coating, isvery corrosion resistant and resilient to wear.Manufactured using mild steel, the grooved rolls are coated with 30-50 microns of electroless nickel. They typically spin at very high speeds and therefore need to be perfectly balanced.

“With other surface treatments, the part would need to be plated and balanced afterwards,” says Marcus Hill. “But with electroless nickel, we are able to balance the grooved rolls, and then plate them, which is far more convenient for everyone.”
